Creating a Healthy Work-Life Balance

Having a healthy work-life balance is a key part of self-care. Working too much can have a negative impact our home life and health. No matter how much you love your job, it’s important to remember that self-care is just as important as providing for yourself or your family.

Most career-oriented women often have a difficult time achieving a healthy work-life balance. We are programmed to do everything and be everything to everyone. We push our needs to the back burner too many times to take care of others. It’s important to work hard and be successful in our careers, but it’s equally as important to enjoy life. So how can we create that necessary balance? Here are a few tips:

  1. Be clear about what is important to you. What are the activities you enjoy outside of work? What commitments in your personal life need your attention as much as your job does? Figure out what it is you need to be harmonious. Maybe it’s the daily gym sesh or attending your kids school activities. Knowing what is most important to you outside of work will help you communicate what it’s important.
  2. Use your calendar. Block off time for the personal commitments you have – including self-care. If you know that you have a 5 PM spin class on Tuesdays, then maybe you’ll work through your lunch hour to make up the time for leaving a little early. If something is in your calendar you’re more likely to honor the commitment instead of blowing it off.
  3. Don’t just do the things you have to do in your personal time. Do the things you want to do. We tend to spend our time away from work doing things that need to be done – laundry, grocery shopping, house cleaning, doctor’s appointments, etc. It’s part of life. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t make time for fun. This is where prioritizing yourself comes into play. Need a new dress for an upcoming event? Make time to shop. Dying to catch up with an old friend over coffee? Make it happen. Devote some of that time away from work to taking care of yourself!
  4. Practice healthy habits. Get a good night’s sleep. Eat healthy foods. Exercise. Drink plenty of water. Practicing these habits on a consistent basis will naturally give you more energy and make you more productive.

You can have an amazing career and a wonderful life. Try one (or all of these) and see if you notice a change in your work-life balance.
